A New Product Earns the NPF Seal of Recognition… But What Does it Mean?

As a person living with psoriasis finding the right over-the-counter (OTC) treatment is parallel to the struggles of dating. First, you must figure out what is it you need or want. Which symptoms do you need alleviated? Is it the itching, flaking, or dry skin that bothers you the most? Next, depending on how you answered the last question your quest for the right option begins with your own research or product suggestions/introductions or “hookups” through other friends living with the condition. Following the connection, you must “date” or tryout the product to see if it will work for you, and what works for one may not be what’s right or effective for you. With all the OTC treatment options out on the market for psoriasis, it can be difficult to navigate through the product claims, ingredients, and effectiveness, but there is hope.

Since 2009, the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition Program has been the “wingman” for those living with psoriasis, connecting us with products which have been tested and proven to ease and decrease the symptoms of psoriasis, “It recognizes over-the-counter products that are proven to safely and effectively manage psoriasis symptoms,” shares Courtney Schneider Director of Strategic Alliances for the NPF. According to Psoriasis.org, the “Seal of Recognition identifies tested and trusted products that help people with psoriasis ease their symptoms of dry, itchy, flaky skin.”sealpic

The process to earn this recognition is not for the faint-hearted, it’s vigorous. The first step is an application process, which helps the NPF gain more insight of the product. “This includes providing scientific research and data from a third-party company that demonstrates test results that the product safely aids in the management of psoriasis symptoms,” says Courtney. The application also requires product information about ingredients, which cannot contain irritants or harmful chemicals. Next, a panel of leading dermatology experts in the psoriasis community reviews the product results and reports submitted by the manufacturer, which can take up to 30 days. From there, the panel of doctors must unanimously vote to pass the product on to the next step, which Courtney explains, “Once we hear from our reviewers we go to the next step which is to send samples to identified patient reviewers.” These patient testers have 30 days to tryout the product and provide feedback and testimonials.

One of the latest products to earn the NPF seal of recognition is the daily 3-step system Prosoria. “Prosoria is the first once daily, three-step psoriasis treatment system proven to effectively relieve the symptoms of psoriasis and help prevent recurrences,” said Art Clapp, CEO of Nuvothera, the product manufacturer. The makers of Prosoria have not only proven to make an effective treatment for those living with psoriasis, but have also proven to be truly dedicated to the psoriasis community. They initially started with one product, and ended with another due to the feedback from advocates in the psoriasis community. Vickie W, who lives with psoriasis is an advocate and tried the product. She shared the following:

“I met Art at a More Than Skin Deep event in Dallas. He approached a group of us about a new product he was designing. It was tar based which instantly turned us against it. Having had experienced tar products before we knew firsthand how stinky and messy they are. After explaining that to Art he threw it in the trash and said he would formulate it based on our suggestions and Prosoria was born.” prosoria-hero-750x750

Now over a year later Prosoria, the lightweight, quickly absorbing, and virtually scentless system has earned the NPF Seal of Recognition. At this time, of the 24 products listed, Prosoria is the only 3-step system to be approved.

To verify if a product has the NPF Seal of Recognition, visit or look for the NPF Seal of Recognition logo when you’re shopping for products at your local store, pharmacy or online.

Stay tune to Being Me in My Own Skin for the big reveal as I open and evaluate Prosoria and give my initial thoughts on the 3 step system. In the meantime, to learn more about the product check out their site www.prosoria.com.
