Psoriasis Psuperhero of the Month: Dorene Lopez

Battling psoriasis is not something you have to do alone. Find out how Dorene Lopez, the Psoriasis Psuperhero of the Month, helps her husband cope with his psoriasis!

 Age:  47

 Location: Ft Lauderdale, FL

Family member affected by psoriasis: My husband of 24 years.

3 words to describe your journey: Frustrating, Educational, Inspired

How did your husband reveal his psoriasis to you, did you know what psoriasis was prior to meeting him: I did not know what psoriasis was – I thought it was like dandruff or eczema. He told me after we were dating a couple of months, back then it was only on his scalp, elbows & knees so it was easy to cover and I never really noticed.

What advice would you give to someone who is dealing with the emotions of a person with psoriasis: Patience~ since it is frustrating. Encourage them to reach out to others going through the same thing, either through a message board or your community, such as a walk. Education about the disease will help too.

What advice would you give to family members of a newly diagnosis patient: I would say to learn about psoriasis and try to be understanding. Each person is different. What works for one person doesn’t always work for another.

Whats the toughest part of dealing with a family member who has psoriasis, and how do you overcome it: To see them suffer with psoriasis, you feel helpless, that is one of the reasons I became involved in volunteering. Not only can I learn, but also educate the community. I feel like I am doing something not only for my husband, but future generations too.

How do you help your loved one conquer psoriasis and not suffer from it: He is the one that has to deal with it and I live with it so I have to respect his decision for treatment and lifestyle. I support him and I became the vocal one about psoriasis & psoriatic arthritis.

What are your future goals to continue the fight against psoriasis, what have you done in the past: Since I became involved with the National Psoriasis Foundation in 2007 I have volunteered as the Leader for the South Florida Psoriasis Support group, traveled to Capitol Hill to speak with our representatives in the House and the Senate, Participated as a team Captain each year for our Walk to Cure Psoriasis, Hosted Comedy for a Cure at our local Improv, attended the Volunteer Conferences, walked in Chicago and San Diego. My future goals are to continue to support the psoriasis community and continue to educate others about psoriasis. One day I hope for a cure and in the meantime reasearch and better treatment options.

The main thing I would like to say is that I have met so many wonderful people along the way and they have become a part of our lives. They are the ones that inspire me and give me hope.
